do tiles act as damp proof?

When we had our cardean fitted in our hall we were told to take up the original tiles so that the latex screed could go straght on to the concrete to give a nice smooth base for the cardean to be laid on. Now we are having problems with damp which is lifting the latex, our builder friend has suggested that the tiles could have been left down as they were probably acting as damp proofing. Is this right and does the flooring need to come up and have a damp proof sealant laid?

hello and welcome to the forum, Now for the bad news!
No the tiles would not work as a dpm. And you will also have to uplift the whole floor to repair. Also you wont be able to salvage the karndean! Can you not go back to the firm who fitted it ?

We have been back and they tested for damp and have said that they can put a sealant down on the concrete but we will have to pay for part of the work to relay the cardean. Should they have done this in the first place?

yes they should of. But on there behalf you didn't pay for the dpm treatment the first time round. Up to yourself if you think its fair to pay for the dpm treatment and them to pay for replacement floor.
