Hi, like you I try to spend as little as possible, I am in the process of building a small extension of 2x5m and I used a hand held rammer (handheld long pole with square metal plate on bottom) and I put a little down, compacted and gradually filled it up, to be warned took several hours, but outcome was good enough.
