Door frame/wall gap sealing

The sealing was broken away from the upvc so have removed it and I'm now preparing to reseal.

The gap on one side and top of the frame is around 1/2". The lintel is directly above the frame.

I'm considering getting a length of dressed timber to insert into the gap above then sealing around the timber. A wise move or should I pack the gap entirely with silicone?

Expanding foam in the gap, 40mm foam filled pvc trim slid into the gap, cap off with a smaller head of silicone, sides, depends on the gap but foam and pvc quadrant and seal

Or for another option.
16mm foam rod pushed in which will make it air tight, then you can silicone over although I would prefer to place a uPVC plastic strip over nearly then silicone in tidy
