Hi,

Looking for some advice.

I want to replace this door frame to an upstairs bedroom.

It is ‘H’ shaped and above the frame is filled with bricks. There is a joist in the attic which runs above the door frame. There is nothing else in the attic

What is the best way of approaching this? I’m guessing the bricks aren’t providing any structural support (?) but is the H frame itself?

Thanks

Does the loft joist run at a right angle to the frame? If so, support it nearby when the frame is out, unless it’s already supported nearby.
The brick infill at the top can be replaced by studwork above the new frame.

Hi. The joists run from the front of the house (window in picture) towards where I am stood when taking the picture. Perpendicular to the door frame. It isn’t supported anywhere else for maybe 3 metres behind where I am stood.

So the new stud work will then support the attic joists?

If it was previously supported by a door frame, albeit with some bricks on it, it can be supported by studwork if done properly. I’m assuming it’s a proper ceiling joist not a trussed roof?

Yes. It’s a proper ceiling joist.
Thanks for your help - I’ll be getting a carpenter in to do it I think so will be done properly.
