Amazingly, the builder before me left a 50mm wide hole in an expensive oak external door.. The previous handle fell off because of flimsy bolts being used instead of screws into the (now non-existent) timber.
So now I'm looking for a lever with a >50mm wide back plate in polished brass to cover it up..
Suggestions welcome!

The 50mm hole will be for the locks and latches that have two holes in them for through bolts.]

Do you mean like this?

There used to be something like this on the door. Still 50mm seems like an excessively quick method as three small holes could be done for the two fixing bolts and the spindle separately, also ensuring that the physical turning of the knob doesn't loosen so easily over time.. Excessive force in turning the knob would be taken by the door much more easily with three separate holes..

Whilst I totally agree that three holes would be better the instructions with these handles quote a 50mm hole (in fact I think they actually say 54mm)
You should be able to get brass knobs slightly bigger than 50mm, you would then need to glue in a "wooden washer" each side for the screws.
