a builder i have recently employed to put a new roof on my kitchen has not doubled the rafters around the new 1.4 x .79 velux on a span of 3.6 He told me that because he used 175x50 rafters he didnt need to. he has also not put a rafter at the top and bottom of the window which means we have a span of .79 He told me this was ok because he has used 50x25 battern. can anyone confirm this is ok?

On that span, the rafters themselves will be OK without doubling-up. But,as you havebeen advised, the tiling battens won't be. It will not be possible to get a good fixing for the tiles in that area as the battens will bounce when they try to nail the tiles down.

Why not have a word with the building inspector and see if he will speak to the builder about the missing rafters and trimmers. That way you avoid any flak from the builder.

If the opening is wider than the centres, then the golden rule is always double up.

Although building inspectors almost always ask for doubling-up, it is not always structurally necessary.

Whether or not doubling up is required depends on the depth of the rafters and the position of the velux along the slope. For 7" deep rafters on the span quoted, doubling would almost certainly not be necessary.

However, on older properties, where the rafters are usually just 3x2, then doubling-up would be adviseable.

It also depends heavily on the width of the opening.

If the rafter length (or rake) is 3.6 then i would agree, it probably would not be necessary.
