Downlighting hassles

I have recently moved house and have 4 downlighters in the kitchen. They seem to have a mind of their own as once the light is switched on the individual lights come on and off as they see fit. I have changed the 3 bulbs that were playing up, but they still go on and off and now the fourth is joining in! We are still getting a slow-dance-disco-effect, which is getting a bit annoying. Anyone got any advice before I resort to the cost of an electrician?

Intermittent contact can be caused by corrosion on bulb contacts or holder by moisture from cooking. Alternatively wiring is not firmly screwed into choc blocks above lamp in ceiling.
If your downlighters are not 240V there may be poor wiring contacts in choc block at isolating transformer.

Thanks very much for your response. Are these issues things that I can try and resolve myself or should I steer well clear?!
