all of our radiators downstairs are stone cold. upstairs seem to heat up. the pump seems to be working ok as far as I can tell, its vibrating. is the problem pump related (impellers), sludge or header tank? The water in the header tank is now cold. and when you press the ballcock valve down no water comes into the header tank. the valve may be stuck. is this the source of our problem or just an additional one? help please

Try closing all the upstairs rads. Does the circulation to the downstairs rads then return? the lack of water to the float valve is a separate problem. You say the header tank is now cold. Was it hot before?

yeah we've tried shutting down all rads upstairs. no luck. yeah header tank was hot before

Hot header tank means pumping over. Pumping over means corrosion. Corrosion means blocked pipes/rads at bottom of system. Probably needs major overhaul by heating engineer.
