I'm thinking about changing the layout of our bathroom to fit in a free standing shower. The only way it will fit will put the shower in the opposite corner to the soil pipe and it will be tricky to get the fall. The bathroom is above the utility room. Can I put a vertical run in and hook into the drain in there? Can I get away with 40mm?

you can do that  but I`d incorporate a mini air admittance valve on a t above the vertical drop - the falling water may pull out the trap under the shower - the pipe size is OK
