Hi there,

After checking for the reason for our drains smelling we've found that our drain joins the main exit pipe by a Y Branch. It looks like for some reason a Y branch was used instead of a straight through 45 degree pipe, as one of the Y branch's goes nowhere.

The problem is when water runs through the Y branch it backs up in the unused part of the Y and clogs up, resulting in the smell. Does anyone have any advice on the best way to block the unused part of the Y branch to prevnet the build up?

Thanks in advance

1. Wash it out.
2. Stuff some newspaper about 4" up it.
3. Fill the remaining part of the hole with a plug of concrete (3:1 sand:cement).
