The building inspector has told me i need to protect the drain running through the footings iv dug before pouring the concrete. Can anyone explain the procedure ?

Depending upon depth, some will accept the pipes wrapped in fibreglass insulation or similar compressible material.

Other times we have shuttered the concrete either side then lintelled over.

thinks he wants it lintelled over can i do it with bricks instead of concrete

It depends where the pipe passes through the trench relative to the concrete/masonry.

If it passes through at the depth of the concrete then you will need to shutter or wrap. If it passes higher up through the masonry then you will slot and lintel over.

If you can achieve the required thickness of concrete beneath the pipe then 'peg up' to the underside of the pipe and lintel over.
