At first sight the receiver looks the same but they changed the operating frequency a few years ago and its not usually very clear which one is which.
They usually sell the two parts together so your question is probably irrelevant anyway.
If you were a little clever with electronics you could probably fiddle with the existing TX unit, possibly just connecting in series with the left batteries, so that you can use it with a standard cheap programmable stat just beside it.
Note that I have not tested that idea but I think the left batts are for the transmitter and the right ones for the clock and stat. So you would program it so that its permanently on by setting to 30°C. The transmitter would be disabled when the new stat was off.
But of course most people would just go and buy a new RF prog stat anyway. I do appreciate that there are some people who like to bodge and save every last penny.
