I tried to remove a colum radiator at the weekend and had no luck. The 'in' pipe is a the top of the radiator with a Drayton valve and I couldn't shut it off. Do I remove the control part and hand turn the little black ring inside right down? Also seemed unable to turn the 'out' valve at the bottom of the radiator - do I need to?

You're supposed to us a special cap but you can make do by putting something between the moving bit inside the head and the pin on the valve body fixed to the pipe. 1/2p pieces were quite good... Then "turn down" the temp until the pin is in - but don't force it.

Yes you need to turn the other valve off too. If the shaft wont turn try loosening the nut around it first - it will weep till you do the nut up again.
