Drumming Mid Position Actuator

Can anybody tell me why my Drayton Mid Position Actuator MA1 intermittently drums? It vibrates through the ceiling and drives us mad! It's also very hot, is this normal?
 
If it is too hot to touch, then it is far from normal.

I suggest replacing the actuator head if the spindle in the body is not stuck.
 
The ball in the valve has gone, new valve is the only cure.
