There be some nuggets of info amongst the green shading... Practical with some real figures.

Whilst holding down your <ALT> key, type 0176 at the number pad, this should produce the degree symbol °

Now that's a first from you empip. It didn't work!

I don't want to highjack this post so will raise the degree problem elsewhere.

So curtains are a waste of time then, apparently, from a thermal point of view !?!?!?!

Thin curtains do little to conserve heat. Thick curtains will but all too often the curtains deflect heat from the radiator under the window onto the window and thus add to wastage.

Thanks, yes, that it what I was thinking. The acticle mentioned a curtain with 6cm of mineral wool but I guess that is ideal case.

I was thinking of getting a curtain to cover my upvc double glazed front door and sidelight but was not sure if it would be worth £40 or more for a fully lined thermal door curtain + tracks etc. It is not particularly drafty but I can feel some cold in front of it. I am not sure if it is more to do with the roof though as it is a porch that sticks out from the house with no second door into the house.

I was looking at these but again doubtful of any significant affect?

Porches without a second door are often wasteful of heat. Was there ever a second door that was removed to create more open space ? Many porches seem to have no insulation in the roof. ( especially where there was previously an inner door )

Heavy ( or thermally insulating ) curtains would reduce convention draughts ( air chilled by contact with the cold door ) and the feeling of cold they produce.

Don't think there would ever have been a 2nd door. I know there is some insulation in the roof as I have seen it when poking though the cloakroom light fitting - probably very little though. I don't think it is that bad and it is probably the last thing I could do after having CWI and the proper loft done. The house is quite "tight" so I suppose a little air from the door isn't too bad a thing.
