What you are asking doesn't seem to have been answered so I thought I'd chip in!

Yes, I've done the 17th edition wiring course from electacourse and I sat my exam in Chepstow and had the highest mark out of our group of 7. I studied at home, but the others paid around £600 for a 4 day course!

The home study course is excellent for helping you get the 2382 17th edition qualification at a low cost and the exam simulator is excellent practice for the real exam. I also bought electacourse's 2377 PAT testing and the 2392 inspection and testing course and found them all very good.

BUT - if you are thinking of becoming an electrician, you will need practical training which the home study route will not provide. It's great for getting on the ladder with some very worthwhile electyrical qualifications, but it won't teach you how to re-wire a house.

The 2382 is a multiple guess exam which is completed with the book of answers in front of you.
Anyone who can read could easily pass, even if they knew nothing about electrical work.

If your job involves panel building and testing motors, this qualification won't be of any use at all.

You'd be amazed how many qualified electricians fail this exam.

I think learning the regs would be beneficial for a foreigner that has moved to the UK (if that is the case here). Certainly it would be for some of the sparks around here! Maybe not so relevant for a panel builder but I imagine it would help on a CV for a foreigner in the industry and at least you will have some knowledge when people ask you about their electrical issues (which they inevitably do if you tell then you work with electrics). Presumably you will come into contact with wiring covered by the regs at some point in your job?
