After a visit to the local diy merchant the job is now done and the shower working as expected. Thanks yo you all for your time and helpful guidance. @The Novice and @oldbutnotdead if that pair of speed fit flexible pipes is of any use to you then whoever pm's me their address first gets it in the post as a token of gratitude.
