Hi
We're reboarding the stud wall to our bathroom and want to add an electric towel warmer/radiator. When ready we will be getting electrician in to wire this and to do new lighting.

The towel rad is 500W - will the electrician need to take this off the main ring or off the lighting circuit?

We've dropped a fused spur box into the landing side of the stud ready.

Thanks guys!

Just needed to put holes thru stud and leave feeder cords in place ready to pull cable thru. Not sure whether they would need to go up to loft (ready to come off lighting circuit) or down (ready to come off ring).

Have to say, we won't be wiring up - leaving that to the pros - but just trying to get it ready as don't want to pay electrician's time for drilling holes etc....

Never had an electric towel rad before - do they usually come of the lighting circuit?

The most appropriate way to wire the towel rail is for your electrician to add a fused spur (flex outlet with 3amp fuse) from your ring final circuit (ring main)

The circuit MUST include a residual Current Device (RCD)

Because it is unlikely that the wiring will be run greater than 50mm from the surface or in earthed conduit/capping In any case it is a room containing a bath or shower so 701.411.3.3 of BS7671 would apply.

This is a DIY forum; very few DIYers will have spent £75 buying BS7671 and so will not know that you are talking about regulations concerning bathrooms.

Since DIYers are usually only working in domestic premises, everything they need concerning regulations is contained in the £22 On-site guide. It would be better to refer to this publication if you can't quote the regulation's description.

Thanks for the responses. We had new distribution board fitted 2 yrs ago so RCDs no problem.

Not doing the wiring ourselves - just needed advice whether to leave access to main or lighting circuit so we could get boarding done over weekend. Now clear on that so thank you.
