Electrical upgrade for shower

He probably means he has 60A fuses and current maximum demand is there or thereabouts without even contemplating an electric shower which is exempt from diversity (100% FLC).

Although you can't apply diversity to the shower supply you can apply diversity to the overall installation.

I know that but if they only had a 60A supply and the shower took 40A then that would leave an design current for the installation of 20A after diversity.
An electric cooker (if fitted) would probably take that alone!
Until we have all details then most of this is speculation anyway.

Hi

unable to download pictures but, the fuse box is a ottermill.
there is another box there called henley. 60/80A. 415V. BS88: 1967.

I stay in a flat, but it is only 1 up as it is a 4 in a block.

I hope this helps.

sorry, not sure what they are. Ottermill made Earth Leakage Circuit Breakers, used to make Voltage operated ones (now obsolete) Does the Ottermil thing look like a big brown switch?

Henley products are not often seen now, apart from a rectangular plastic box with two or more red, and two or more black, large round cables going into it. No switches or fuses on these, it is just a large junction box.

Can you give dimensions and colours of the things you have, and describe:
do they have switches on them? How many, how big

Do they have fuses in them? How many, what colour, what is printed on them

A "fuseboard" usually has two thick round cables (usually red and black, may be coated in grey plastic) going into it, and several flat grey or white cables coming out. Modern ones are usually white plastic. Old ones may be brown plastic. Very old ones may be wood or cast iron.

There should also be some green and yellow, or green, plastic coated earth cables, there shouldn't be (but sometimes are) bare steel or copper earth wires

All the cables should be sheathed in shiny PVC. If you have any that appear to be covered in rubber or cloth, maybe matt or perished, do not touch them but describe where they go.

About how old would you say the instalation is?

If you are able to take photos and email them to [email protected] you can ask him to add them to this thread.

p.s. there are a variety of old and newish ones pictured in this thread
