Hi

In a situation where steels have been designed to go into the outer leaf of an existing masonry wall and sit on padstones (where the other end will be a steel frame (goalpost style) which will be supported on pad foundations), would you expect the SE to inspect the existing house foundation to ensure it can support this additional loading?

SE has not done this and I just wondered if this should be done or if I am worrying about nothing?

Or is it the case that it will be the padstones, together with the goalpost style frame and the new pad foundations on the other end that will be designed to take the bulk of the weight?

Thanks you
George

No I wouldn't expect the foundations to be inspected, unless say the house was very old and/or the foundations were questionable. The end of a beam sitting on a wall spreads the weight over several metres of its foundation.

For most beams you'll have pretty symettric loading so the reactions will often be the same. You could conceivably deliberately shed load to the column and new pad by setting it in and having the beam cantilever past it, but that would be unusual,

BC may ask for the existing founds to be inspected, but that's more likely where you're doing a knock through and therefore only having a llimited section of the existing foundation loaded.
