Exposed brick fireplace

Hi, in desperate need of some help with my fireplace. We opened up the fireplace to install multi fuel stove to find an old hidden fireplace as shown. It was exposed brick but looked pretty unsightly I then made the mistake of painting it and to be fair it doesn't look any better if not worse. I can't afford a plasterer so I am looking to do something myself but the question is what? Has anybody any idea what I can do with it?
