extending a dishwasher outlet hose

I have just purchased a dishwasher and the outlet pipe does not reach the waste pipe. I bought an outlet hose and a outlet union 3/4 by 3/4 connector. When the outlet pipe is joined using the connector it is easy to pull apart still. Am I supposed to put a jubilee clip round it or glue the pipe? Any advice greatly appreciated.
