Today, as a sensible householder with my OSG, I was replacing a switched socket in my elderly mother's house. I noticed there was no grommet in the back box, and as the mounting screws were loose, I put one in before re-fixing it. However, the earth wires had been cut very short when it was installed, just reaching into the earthing terminal in the backbox, and I had great difficulty refitting them with a new sheathed wire to the socket terminal.

I have not come across this before, I like conductors to be slack enough that there is no tension on them. I would like to extend them, but don't have ratchet crimpers. I considered putting in a single piece of choc-block, but this seemed rather a bodge. Is there a neat and workmanlike way to do it?

can't you just put them in the backbox terminal and take a short loop of wire from there to the socket?

That was how it was originally done, but they are cut absurdly short (half an inch) so very difficult to get them both in, and they are pulling tight.

Maybe the new grommett has used just a tiny bit of free play.

chock block or crimp does seem your only real option then.
