Hi

I've moved into a house which has an external light for the patio similar to this http://tinyurl.com/222wtp

The trouble begins when I trace the cable for it. The cable leads through the external brick wall to a 3-pin plug which is plugged into a wall socket inside. Is this dangerous? How dangerous? :)

Cheers!

What size fuse is in the plug top?

It's not dangerous, just sloppy, lazy and IMHO bad pratice.

But it's not that different than having it wired back to a spur.

It's a 13A fuse.

I hear you about the sloppiness and laziness but seeing as the room has just been redecorated it seems an awful lot of messing about with chasing and spurring to get the same effect.

and maybe sleeve the hole in the wall. Sharp brick can chafe through insulation.
