Question for @Mottie @carmanmemoranda and other knowledgeable in the field.
My car's Speedo only works with the radio off.
My question is: if I hardwire an external Speedo and stick it on the dash, will it be ok to leave it for MOT or would I need to remove it.
Also, I'm thinking that one day the Speedo will fail completely.
Would the external Speedo pass the MOT?
I'm talking about something like this:

That should do fine or even use an app on a phone would do. Worse case, leave the radio off for the test!

Not wanting to play devil's advocate but surely the speedo needs to be permanently fitted? But I would have taken the radio fuse out to be sure. :)

Ok, thanks.
What about if the Speedo stops working completely like has happened to many owners of this model?
Can a hardwired Speedo pass MOT?
Just thinking ahead here.

As a tester, I Cannot fail a speedo unless it is.....

If a road test is not necessary, you should only reject a speedometer if it’s clearly not working.

The obvious time to look is comparing mileages to the previous years tests. If they are clocking up steady mileage, it appears to be working. Confirmed as I drive the vehicle into the testing bay.

Whether it works correctly, accurately, consistently is not part of the test. Just ( and this is a bit odd at 1st) , is it NOT working ?

Full test info here.

You must check the speedometer of vehicles first used on or after 1 October 1937 with a maximum speed above 25mph. You do not need to check Class 3 vehicles.

If a road test is needed, for example to carry out a decelerometer test, you must check whilst driving that the speedometer is working.

If a road test is not necessary, you should only reject a speedometer if it’s clearly not working.

Speedometers do not need to be lit on:

  • vehicles with no front or rear position lamps
  • vehicles that have front or rear positions lamps that are permanently disconnected, painted over or masked
You can accept a tachograph as an alternative to a speedometer if it satisfies the requirements of this inspection.

And just re read the original post.

Turn the radio off, the tester will thank you for it being off, he wants the quiet, in part to hear other noises, if any.

Yes, at the moment that's what I do, but I was wondering if it stops working completely, even with the radio off.
It's happened to lots of owners of this model.
Some have had luck by changing the sensor which is a pig job so no mechanic wants to do it.
Some still had the same problem after changing the sensor.

It's not that bad a job, especially if car is on a ramp.

Need to be gentle and ease the old 1 out is all, too much brute force and you can end up with half of the old 1 left in the gearbox.

But the mot regs just specify a speedo. Doesn't say anything more.

1 further consideration for a stand alone speedo on the dashboard. If the mot tester deems it is in the way, then he may remove it before the test, as per.....

You can remove items such as a sat nav or air fresheners that obstruct the driver’s view of the road. However, make sure you tell the driver.

Obviously, if he feels it needs to be removed then there would be no speedo, so make sure you position it where it does not obstruct the drivers view of the road.

I had my mot last week and the tester tested the heater controls?

That's a new one on me.
