Hello,

There’s a couple of garden projects I want to do which I’d like to have a painted finish. Which is the best wood for this? Can I paint pressure treated soft wood with primer and top coat?

Cheers.

i don't know if technically you can or can't, never read the small print

However I have (tanalised stuff) and it seemed to work well, obviously make sure it is fully dry - even varnished some and it turned out ok.

Have you considered “garden paint”, e.g. the Cuprinol product?

Yes, but that wouldn’t give me the painted finish I want. I’m after a nice finish like an external door might have. Not like a fence of shed might have.

your biggest problem might be the quality of the timber, is it fencing stuff you are using, it can sometimes be very difficult to get a nice planned finnish

as for the tanalised stuff - if it has been done for some time (like a year) then it will be fine - try some some primer on it see what it looks like after a week, i used oil based and it stuck as well as paint sticks

The good news is I’ve not bought the timbre yet! I’m on a bit of a budget, so obvs don’t want to spend too much. But also want it to last and look good. So which is the best timbre to go for, for an outside wooden structure, with the aim of a nice painted finish as opposed to looking like a shed?

What structure? , anything open to the weather will quickly peel as the expansion and contraction breaks up the paint surface .
