Hi,

I recently moved into new house and downstairs cloakroom extractor fan was not working. Purchased a new one and still no luck. Tested voltages and found out that yellow switch live coming out of wall was dead. I searched on forums how to solve this and found a thread on here:

https://www.diynot.com/diy/threads/replacing-extractor-fan-no-switch-live-cable.278871/

Similar scenario so I did what was suggested here and looped a wire from live to live switch terminal. Fan does come on but when light is OFF and goes off when light is on

How do I fix this?

Diagram attached. I know grey wire is too long! Reason for terminal connector is because there is zero slack on main cable from wall and doesn’t internal connections otherwise.

thanks in advance for any help offered!

Tested voltages

What instrument did you use to test?

have you looked in the ceiling rose yet?

Take the fan off the wall so you can look at the supply cable. How many cores does it have, including any that may have been cut off just as they emerge from the cable sheath? When you pull on the coloured insulation of the cores of the supply cable, do any of them start to slide off?

Can you lift the floor above the cloakroom ceiling lamp?

What sort of light is it.
Is it possible to remove the lamp and see what the fan does.
Working fan with the lightswitch off is sometimes a sign of them being inadvertently wired in series or maybe a lost Neutral

Also check that centre terminal on the timer is actually the correct terminal for Neutral
