A friend needs some 150mm square gate posts with decorative finials. I am thinking of making hollow boxes from marine ply put together and coated with epoxy resin. The finials will be solid and epoxied to the top of the boxes. I can't see how this would be less effective than making them from solid timber. Am I missing anything? TIA for any advice.

You seem to be asking if a fake post made with four bits of plywood will be the same (strength) as a solid post? Or am I missing something?

I reckon that a square box will be absolutely fine as a gatepost, right up until the point where fails spectacularly 
Get concrete ones and paint them shade of wood same as the gate so they'll never have to worry about it again
It won't work, don't do it, buy 150mm Treated Post.
Perhaps they are ornamental dummies, with no gate attached.
It should be OK until rain makes it damp.
