Oh, I thought we were talking about politicians saying one thing when not in power and doing the opposite when in power. Well you were until I gave an alternative example that didn’t suit you. If it was only about giving wealthy people handouts that they didn’t need, why are they reversing it - have they decided that they are going to give wealthy people handouts now?

Do you mean give it to wealthy people who don't need it or to wealthy people who do need it?

How do you tell what type of 'wealthy' people are? Apparently, for 2025/2026 everyone born before 22 September 1959 will get it but anyone with an income over £35k will get it taken back through their tax code and that will include me this year. I would say that plenty of people of that age with an income up to £35k wouldn’t need it unless they were property wealthy, cash poor and lived in a hard to heat home.

This IMO is correct and I've paid income tax all of my life, which includes since officially retiring. I'm now classed as elderly, but as my somewhat complicated income from several sources excludes me from the PAYE system, I have to sort my own returns out and ensued HMRC receive it in time or they get into a skittish hissy fit.
