If you find your cd/dvd drive is slow and not burning as quickly as it used to - as mine was. It could be the data transfer rate has been reduced.
Apparently everytime the drive has problems reading a disc (due to dirt scratches etc) xp reduces the transfer rate, but never re-sets it. My dvd burn times had gradually increased from about 9 mins to over 40 mins.
This site has a fix that worked for me and I can now burn as before.

This fix will also work for reading as well as writing, so if you find reading from CD/DVD/HD is reeeeeally slow, check the fix out - not very common, but have seen it a few times on PCs and servers

Many times the head of CD-ROM/Writer has external particles like dust or cd coating on it. Just clear the head and the problem of slow reading/writing speed is solved.
