Felt repair in to gutters.

Hi guys.
Could you tell me what is state of the art method of renewing tatty edges on roofing felt where it's supposed to overlap in to the gutters,installed in the 60s please ?

Remove bottom rows of tiles/slates cut back perished felt and install felt support trays/eave trays.
refit tiles/slates.

Lap the old felt over the trays.
