Starting with bare joists, I want to lay down boards of 8' x 4' WBP ply. On top of this I plan to lay a floating floor of 'fermacell flooring boards'. My choice of fermacell is to achieve sound insulation from the noisy flat below. I'll probably put dense mats between the joists as well.

My problem is that the combined layers of WBP ply and fermacell make the overall flooring too thick. [ 18mm ply + 20mm fermacell ]

The next thickness down from 18mm ply seems to be 12mm.

Can I use 12mm ply as flooring instead of the 18mm?
