Just thought Id post this as it may help others.
Boiler started playing up a few weeks ago, occasionally it would go into lockout, sometimes on CH mode sometimes on DHW mode but especially if the boiler was running in CH mode and you then went to run the HW.
Steadily got worse until one day last week just refused to light after resetting.
Got local Corgi reg plumber in, he had a look and said its either the gas valve or maybe the PCB but he would phone Ferroli this week and ask what they thought.
I wasn't convinced so this morning took the covers off and had a look at the spark, very poor I thought so took the electrode out gave it a clean and then experimented with different gaps, and guess what, seems fine, It makes me a bit mad as Im not a Plumber by any means but an IT engineer and I just used a logical fault finding procedure by starting at the beginning!!!!!!!!!!!

Yes modena has dodgy electrodes, they will need replacing as they drop under heating and reduce the gap, the modified ones don't. Mind you the gas valves stick on these aswell.

Whilst these are difficult boilers, I dont rate your CORGI "plumber" as much of a boiler engineer if he cannot diagnose the fault(s). If he needs to call the manufacturer then that does not do much for his own skills.

Dont think yourself as terribly clever to have sorted it out, after all they are not rocket science, rather your "plumber" is probably more of a plumber than a boiler engineer! I hope he did not charge you!

I dont think myself clever at all, but it doesnt really say much for Corgi accreditation either does it? as with all of these so called industry recognised papers at the end of the day its pure luck if you get someone that knows their stuff, and yes he charged me £30 for the call out.

corgi means he has the knowledge to either not poison you or blow you up, doesn't mean he knows the weak points on ferollis. I would imagine that the call out is only charged once though and he will come back on a parts and time basis to repair the fault. Hit and miss though no doubt about it.

I dont suppose that £30 is unreasonable in South wales even though he does not seem to have much idea about your boiler.

However, looking at it from the customers perspective, he has paid £30 and then still had to get it working himself.

We give a no fix-no fee guarantee on fault diagnosis, but then we charge a fixed fee of £74 out of London. We are able to do this because we Know that we can diagnose all boiler faults. The fixed fee covers any length of time and includes further visits to the same fault. We usually identify the fault withing 15 minutes. Fixing is included in most cases but obviously parts are extra at list price or less.
