Im getting the hall stairs and landing ready for painting, so yesterday i filled in any dents cracks etc on the wall, let the filler dry overnight and this morning sanded down the filler until it was totally blended into the surrounding area and painted over the filler with the original paint now the filler and area around it is dull looking, so before I start painting the walls is there anything I can do so the filler isn't visible when I put two or three coats of matt paint on the walls. TIA

you need to apply several coats before the new section will blend in. If the rest of the wall was painted with a roller, apply roller coats or the surface texture won't match.

You did remember your mist coat, didn't you?

John D the paint was very watery, so would i be ok using the white matt emulsion im going to be using on the ceiling and apply it with a roller? or is there a better way for a perfect finish? Yes the rest of the wall was painted with a roller.

yes, thick paint on a roller should give it the right texture. it may take a few.

have you stirred it with a plastic spatula?

When dry, give it a coat of the old colour, or the colour difference may show through in a patch. White filler also does this if the rest of the wall is coloured.

Its dry from this morning, so give it a coat of the old colour with a roller for smooth walls , i mixed the paint with a wooden spatula?

I mentioned stirring because you said the paint was thin. I thought perhaps it had settled to the bottom of the tin.

I use mohair, sheepskin or synthetic wool rollers, for texture. Might be just habit.

It's called "grinning". Some fillers are worse than others, and the problem can be exacerbated with poor quality paints. In general, more coats of paint will help.

guys thanks, i used some white emulsion over the filler when I was painting the ceiling, applied two coats of emulsion on the walls and the filler isn't visible.
