I am painstakingly removing years of paint to retore the beams in my cottage. What do people recommend for a finish? Or should I just leave them? I've heard linseed oil mentioned elsewhere.
Cheers.

Linseed oil will send them orange. Just leave them.

Yes wax looks good if applied with steel wool and not too thick.

Why not try Briwax. You van get it in different shades as well.

I've always liked the look of wax over stains and varnishes but each to their own!

Yes, Briwax is good stuff. It smells nice, too.

Most stupid moment of my 20s : saw nice old chest of drawers in second-hand/antique shop, talking to shopkeeper about it...asked how you would keep it looking nice. Shopkeeper recommended earwax. I asked where you could get earwax in big enough quantities to polish a chest of drawers. Shopkeeper gave me a strange look and produced a tin of Briwax. Bought the chest of drawers out of pure embarrassment.

I'm with you on this one emilybronte, I was going to ask the question as he had posted on the woodworking forum too but it has since been removed.I've looked at the website but still don't see how a beam painted with black gloss can be treated without stripping or sanding and brought back to reveal grain , carpenters marks and wood worm holes all without ANY mess whatso ever

As to the OP's question I'd also say bri wax or leave alone although I'd be interested to know what sort of wood the beams are.
