I have just bought a shop, and the wiring is quite old, so it will probably need a re-wire. To what extend is it a requirement to provide Fire Alarms in the shop (they don't currently exist!).
Ok - thanks, I'll take a look. A further question - if fitting an alarm to a lock-up shop (there is a flat upstairs with no common areas - i.e. both shop and flat have separate entrance), is there a requirement to link the shop alarm to the flat upstairs?, or does this apply if there is common (e.g. stairs).

Have a word with the Fire Prevention Officer at your local Fire Station. He or she will give you good advice and as has been said building regulations will apply.
As I have linked, if you read the information, you will see that you need to do a fire risk assessment, you can do this yourself or if you feel that it would be better that someone trained in this field carried this out, you can hire fire risk assessors.
