Fire pit on artificial grass

Hello.

This is more of a question of fire pits over the artificial grass.

So, I live on a cutout of a hill, and this cutout has been there for some 1000 years or 2000 depending on who you ask. It was either the romans or the Normans. Anyway they didn’t cut the wedge flat, there are bits that are lower so the grass becomes a mud bath, so we have tried to level it out, but it’s not been effective, so we have artificial grass.

In the centre of the grass, is where we want to put a fire pit, but we don’t want to have it out all the time, just on evenings where we have family coming over for a barbecue. We can sit around the fire, and enjoy the evening sun.

So, I am going to get a fire pit in the next few weeks, and I know heat rises, but what would the heat be below/underneath it be? Would it melt the grass? Would I need to lay something down like stones or pavers? But wouldn’t that absorb the heat?

Even the stone under will get really hot.

What about the spitting wood or coat as it burns as well

You'd be better off cutting out a section of carpet and laying a patio just to sit your fire pit on. How big a radius you choose depends on how far you think burning embers will travel.

The MiL had artificial grass in her garden. Chairs and ladders placed on it left indentations that never sprang back up. It looked terrible.

Either cheap or not installed correctly? We put artificial grass down maybe around 2010-2012 I think, and we have brought some new artificial grass this new year (2025 early January) as the grass had bleached to a colour we didn’t like, and you could see the difference in the colour that was under a heavy plant pot which was a much deeper green and it bounced back with a little tlc and brushing. It’s where our Christmas tree is kept, in a pot that we bring in for Christmas.

My plan was to get a simple fire pit, that will be like this, and I didn’t know if they all radiate the heat (to get hot enough to melt the artificial grass), if putting pavers would protect it when we want to use it or if I need to remove the grass temporarily, when we will use the fire pit, then put it back when we don’t need to use it.

Loads of information online.
3m buffer zone between grass and fire pit.
Stone island to sit fire on

Go look it up.

Quite possibly. It crackles when you walk on it too. Even Grasshopper would never be able to creep up on anyone on that lawn!

(You'd probably need to be in your 60’s to understand that) :ROFLMAO:
