Can I fix a consumer unit directly to an internal brick wall (painted) or does it have to be mounted on a fire proof board?

If the later, would a piece of plaster board be OK?

(If this topic has already been covered please advise of links as I couldn't find any)

many thanks.

pasterboard is fireproof but not really strong, if the wall is flat fix it to that, if not piece of timber will be ok

Most RECs, use chip to fix new build stuff to. Mine insists that if the board is going on an external wall, it has to be spaced off the wall. if internal, it can be mounted directly. Ask 'em!
