We have opened up an old fireplace in an upstairs bedroom (it’s a Victorian house) and we’re now prepping the room for new skirting boards and carpet, but need to fix the hearth area first.
I assume I need to lift out the remnants of the crumbly old hearth surround first, but how do I create a level surface with the wooden floorboards surrounding this? If I’m pouring in a self-levelling compound, how should I prep the base of bricks/general debris below so we don't get liquid seeping through the gaps into the ceiling below the room?
We're planning to carpet over this space, so it doesn't need to be pretty - just needs to be flush with the rest of the floor level before we fit skirting boards around this area.
