Fireplace surround advice

Hi,

I have just had all our floorboards replaced in our dining room but they couldnt take out this surround. They filled the holes, as you can see, but it just looks ugly. The builder said we should paint it black but i think there would just be too much black!i would appreciate some opinions, i realise its just a cosmetic thing

Can you replace the small decorative hearth with one that covers the lot? or tile the lot?

The lugs on that cast iron fireplace are meant to be buried in the wall, by the way.
