Fireplace Widening

My wife wants to replace our existing gas fire with a new "slab" type fire. Having checked them out I notice that the recess in the chimney breast will need to be doubled in width to approx 900mm and be made deeper by about 100mm. Does anyone have ideas as to how much work is involved in such a change? How much it is likely to cost (I'm in the South East)? and should I be contacting Building Control?
