first floor chimney

Not sure if this is correct forum, please move if not.

My girlfriend has a first floor flat, it is need of work. It dates from around 1920.

In the room on the first floor there is a chimney breast and hearth, it has been pointed out to me that this is not supported from below, as there is a shop window below. Should I be worried? Or was the building built in this manner? I'm gathering the place has been like this for decades, and it is tied into the wall. any advice welcomed.

It's the fact i now know about it, I removed a skin of bricks that had been built around it and found it had no lintel, I have put one in.

Can a chimney breast be built in this manner on a first floor?
