My dishwasher drawers are six months old. Over the past two months, my cabinetry has started to mold. You can also smell mold coming from the garbage disposal. After many visits from the repairman, we are still trying to figure out what the problem is. I suspect that it's the steam coming from the dishwasher when the load is finished (it comes out of the top of the door). Is this normal?

Did you, or the installer, fit the tape that F&P supply with the dishwasher, that stops steam entering the cabinet?

The builder installed the dishwasher. I am not sure that the tape would do any good in this instance (there is no tape that I can see on the bottom of my granite counter top), as there is about a 1/2 gap between the top of the dishwasher and where the granite counter top rests on the cabinets themselves.

Well, when I install these I leave the intructions with the customer.

In there, it requires the installer to use the tape (which the manufacturer provides) to seal the gap so that water vapour can't get into the cabinet and ruin it.

If the installer didn't do this, then he/she is liable for the consequences.

The Fisher Paykel folks just sent an e-mail for me to call them. I may also have to have the cabinet maker make an insert to fill in the gap. The appliance people here who sell it (and who have been out to try and fix the problem) haven't been too interested in my theory that the steam is coming out of the drawer and flowing back over the top of the dishwasher to the cabinets.

I'd bet I'm probably right.

Just got off the phone with the Fisher Paykel folks. Like you said - it's all about the tape. Apparently, it doesn't matter how close the dishwasher either is or isn't from the top of the counter top. There is no requirement for it to be flush.

I've got my tape on order - now to get the appliance folks to come out and put it on! That could be a task all by itself.

Thanks for the input.
