Fitting a cast iron Georgian Hob Grate

Evening guys,

Quick query regarding the space in the hob sections on either side - do I need to fill the voids with brickwork/rubble much like the back filling of a normal fireplace insert? or can it just be pressed up against the flat brickwork of the fireplace and sealed at the edges??
