I'm looking to fit a cylinder thermostat to a system that doesn't currently have one fitted. The current setup is quite old and just has a single pipe loop passing through the boiler and the cylinder, that is extended to the radiators via a 2 way value when the main thermostat demands it. The HW is always heated when the CH is on.

The current wiring is

Can I just put the new cylinder thermostat between 16 and 3 on here, and then join 8 to 3 to enable the normal heating to still work when required?

Fit a cylinder stat & have someone (spark) wire it in. Don`t do it yourself,

If you don't fit a zone valve on the hot water circuit I feel you will be wasting your time and money as hw will still keep heating when ever ch is on as well :? :?

The extra zone valve might be useful, but I would prefer not to do too much until I do other work in the future.

I just need to check that the connections are correct to fit that in for now.

I did want to get a plumber to fit it as a simple job, of the five I called 3 didn't bother to get back to me and the other 2 failed to turn up.

I don't know why but I hear this all the time

I do...Its because its too effing complicated for most of the effing half wits out there. (i've had a drink tonight)

Plumbers and central heating wiring/controls...not a good combination

USEFUL!!!! USEFUL!!!

its is bloody essential

leave well alone before you hurt yourself

as for plumbers not wanting this work, maybe because what you asking is so ridiculous they have not wasted their time.

get some one in to give you a price to bring your system (somewhat) uptodate

sheesh People

I asked them for a price for fitting a cylinder thermostat, no more no less. How they did it would be up to them. Is that a "ridiculous" request, or are you jumping to conclusions?

Could anyone explain, without blowing their top, why a cylinder stat could not be added in the manner suggested?

If if cannot be done then so be it, but I would like to gain a little more knowledge of why not.

It would work ok without heating but as soon as you put this on there's nothing to stop the boiler circulating through the HW cylinder which is why you need a zone valve which works in series with the stat.

phead, can you work out what will happen when the room thermostat detects a fall in temperature and closes its contacts?

Then can you work out what will happen when the cylinder thermostat detects a rise in temperature and opens its contacts?

If the answer to the second question is "nothing", then why would you want to fit a cylinder thermostat?
