I have a plug connected to a transformer which then supplies 24v to a lighting set. I need to fit a inline switch as I can not turn off at socket. Should I fit it between socket and transformer or between transformer and lights (in the 24v twin core cable).

Either would work, but putting the switch on the 240V supply side would mean that the transformer isn't running needlessly when the lights are switched off. A switch on the 24V side would also need to be able to carry considerably more current than one on the primary side (roughly ten times as much, in fact, as the secondary voltage is one-tenth of the primary).
