I'm wanting to replace a really tatty door lining upstairs, its also not square.
Removing the architrave I can't seem to see a lintel and I'm concerned that the wall is partially supported by the lining?

Please see pics, what do you think?

I've fitted doors and architrave before but never the actual lining.

Looking at these pics, I would be inclined to clear some plaster above (try tapping the wall upwards and listen for a variation) the bricks sitting on the top of the packer may well just be infill and a proper lintel placed above. A suspect something in the past may have dictated this...pinenot :)

Thanks for responding pinenot, I will chip some plaster away, I'll be using wider architrave so hopefully wont make too much unnecessary mess.
arrgh never simple is it

Nope, but that's the joy, let us know how you got on...pinenot :)

My old man suggested going in the loft and checking if the right lining leg was all the way up, he mentioned that they are in his house except that the void above the doors is plasterboard (on his).
He mentioned the walls could be in someway tied in due to its location. Its the red line in the diagram below. Do you think this is likely?

Thanks

Certainly go up and have a look and post the results back here...pinenot :)

:(
Looks like it goes all the way up! You can see the light switch wire that runs down the side of it.

This is the state of the frame that is so tatty. Do you think its restoreable?

One good/bad thing, depending how you look at it, it's not load bearing as such, only load appears to be the brick infill which could be replaced if you wanted to. As for the state of the frame, it's not to bad, some paint stripper required and making good the old lock keeper (by the looks) That would allow you to retain the brick infill and plaster etc., in other words the choice is really yours...pinenot :)

Had a thorough look at the frame and what would be involvwd changing it today. The landing architrave is all good so it seems ott to remove all that and have to get both rooms reskimmed.

Anyway I decided to strip it back and its actually come up ok.
Her indoors wants to keep it unpainted and stain it instead, as this is how or landing is. The main problem is the mess from an old door catch as you can see in pics. Could I use some kind of wood filler that can be sanded and stained? Or will it have to chisel a block out and insert a new one?

Thanks mate.

Far better to chisel out the old pocket and fit a cover piece (no need to fill the latch hole) using a piece of similar wood and grain, glue it in. Time and dust/grime will bring the patch closer in colour, and if you stain it perhaps you can match the patch in with extra coats...pinenot :)
