I've taken up the carpet in two rooms and would like to fit it back. I have a hammer and bolster and a Stanley knife.

How would I go about this without buying specialist tools for the job ?

You may not need a kicker it depends on what type of carpet & how much it was stretched when first fitted. If you fit one side to the gripper first you should then be able to lay it out fairly flat up to the opposite side & then kick into place by gripping a couple of feet in your hands & holding it up to form a right angle, then kicking the bottom of the right angle of the carpet into place with the side of your foot while standing at the backing side thus tightening the carpet. Then fix to grippers. Repeat the process across the room.

Thanks guys. I'll follow a YouTube tutorial to make my own kicker and fit back the carpet using jj's suggestions.
