Fitting dimmer switch in 3 way circuit

I have a 3 way switch circuit in a room which has 17 50W low voltage lights on them.

Can I replace the intermediate switch with a dimmer switch - and what would that dimmer switch be called?

If it exists, would a 1000w dimmer be needed here.

17 x 50W 12v ( 100W corrected for startup and transformer ) = 1700W...

so no a 1000W dimmer is not big enough..

also, as far as I am aware, there is no such thing as an intermediate dimmer..

So in other words, it is not possible to get a dimmer anywhere in this setup?

Not easily, no.


You can get massive dimmers, but certainly not as a direct replacement for a plate switch.


This is a dimmer capable of dimming 84kW, but might be a bit much for your requirements
