Hi guys i know this has been asked before but my query i cant find answer to sorry!

I live in Bungalow with detached garage - boiler is in there and the oil tank about ten metres behind garage with oil feed pipe exposed (should i insulate it with something?)

Last year my pipes in garage froze with the cold weather so im looking into fitting a frost stat. My timer switch is in the house and is wired into a double socket in the garage with 3 core cable. I spoke to spark who told me it has to be 4 core so there is spare cable to work with. Problem is the cable is underground and i have no way of getting another cable from the boiler to the timer switch. Is there nothing at all i can do to wire up a frost stat?

Any help appreciated

It all depends on the type of boiler. Tell us more!

Many combi boilers, for example, have dedicated onboard terminals for a frost stat. If you had one of these, you'd be in luck and could simply mount the frost stat near the boiler in the garage and link the two with any suitable 2-core cable.

On the other hand, if your "wiring centre" and pump etc. are indoors, then the electrician is probably right.

If the latter, there are probably other ways of doing things, e.g. mounting the stat externally on your bungalow, in a weatherproof enclosure. It could be wired so that it's only in-circuit when your heating is switched off. It would then need thoughtful setting so that your boiler is protected but you're not wasting money every winter evening - easier said than done, and once it kicks in, it will continue to run until the outside temperature rises again :|

Not ideal, but better than nothing.

Chris sorry the boiler is warmflow its not the new style condensor one - its about 5 yr old sorry dont have exact model on me at min but i seriously doubt it has the onboard terminals you mentioned.
The pump is in the garage though if that makes any difference.
Good idea on putting the stat external - how about the roof space (would be real easy wired!) but maybe thats silly idea? I would really need a pipe stat too then to turn it off
